Opportunity: Apply For The Tech By Her Accelerator Program Today!

Application deadline 13th March 2020

The Tech By Her Accelerator program is a Pan-African training program that was created by MEST together with Make It in Africa and run by GIZ, to mentor female tech entrepreneurs in Africa. The accelerator program that has been dubbed Tech by Her is carrying out its first 3 month program in March and all female-led startups are encouraged to apply.

Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest growth rate of female-run businesses in the world, according to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor Women’s Report (2019). The tech by her Accelerator program saw that women in this region face a lot of challenges while running their businesses and decided to provide women an opportunity to learn ways they can face the challenges and overcome. For its first program, they have selected three countries; Ghana, Kenya and Nigeria.

The aim of the accelerator program is to develop strong female communities and to provide women with hands-on skills. The program also works to enhance growth among female-led businesses by recognizing and maximizing the unique strengths of the female entrepreneur and equipping them with the needed knowledge, tools, skills and resources to scale and sustain their businesses in a competitive environment.

The accelerator program will provide this amazing opportunity to 10 females who are based in Kenya, Ghana and Nigeria. The females eligible to apply for the 10 positions must;

  • Be a female founder/co-founder of an organization and available to participate fully in all aspects of the program
  • Be an early-stage startup and have achieved commercialization and monetization phase.
  • Be technology-based, or have technology as the core enabler of the business.
  • Have begun operations at least one (1) year before applying for this program and have a live product or service on the market.
  • Be an African national or resident and have registered the business in one of the three operational countries (Ghana, Nigeria, and Kenya).
  • Have evidence of revenue and a clearly demonstrated potential to scale.
  • Be a business model with a social impact, i.e. with a solution to a problem as described in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) (locally and/or globally)
  • Be willing to organize at least one (1) community event in your operational country with support from the local MEST office.
  • Be willing, as a founder, to be an ambassador of the program and of tech entrepreneurship, encouraging and motivating other females in the entrepreneurial space.

Successful applicants of the Tech by Her Accelerator program will meet in Accra, Ghana for a ten-day boot camp, all expenses paid. During their stay in Ghana the cohort members will have meaningful discussions on growth, scalability, and sustainability led by industry leaders and mentors who have vast knowledge and understand the technology industry and can provide valuable insight into each unique business.

After the boot camp, the female entrepreneurs will return to their countries of origin where they will work on implementing the valuable skills that they learnt. They will work with local MEST teams to put together a community building event for females in the tech space. And they will also continue with the mentoring program virtually, conducting meetings at least once in a month with mentors.

The tech by her Accelerator program ends in a five day meetup in Ghana, all expenses paid. The female entrepreneurs will receive a hands-on training, mentoring and access to industry leaders who will share their experiences and expertise from across the continent. The cohort members will also have the opportunity to pitch in front of a panel of investors.

After this event they will join the Tech by Her Accelerator alumni group. All the alumni will then be able to train and mentor other female tech entrepreneurs.

The accelerator program being the first of its kind aims at empowering female tech entrepreneurs to harbor skills that build sustainable and profitable businesses. They not only want to promote female businesses but they also want to build a strong community of female tech entrepreneurs.
