Taxi-Hailing Platform Bolt Rolls Out Women-Only Service in Kenya

There are different taxi platforms in Kenya, including Uber, Bolt, Easy Cab, among many others, all of which have been providing service for everyone regardless of their gender.

However, there have also been endless complaints from the users of the Bolt platform, especially female clients, claiming of sexual harassment and assault from the drivers.

Just recently, a lady identified as Suzzy accused a Bolt driver of assault due to a disagreement on the amount of fare charged after a trip.

Bolt then put out a statement that defended the driver citing the uncooperation from the lady customer.

Last year also saw another woman file a complaint about a Bolt rider who raped her and stole her money and other personal belongings.

With so many harassment and assault cases reported by customers using the platform, some went ahead to uninstall the app claiming that no action was being taken against the rogue drivers.

Bolt has therefore unveiled a women-only feature on the app where women can request for rides solely from women drivers.

This comes at a time when women had posed several complaints while using the platform.

This is just a drop in the ocean when it comes to dealing with the problem at hand. The solution should start with how the Bolt management handles complaints from its customers and ensuring that drivers adhere to the strict policies put in place.

Some of the Bolt drivers are also on the other taxi platforms, which record fewer complaints as compared to Bolt.

Will this new feature help end the rampant cases of abuse witnessed before? Time will definitely tell.
