Why Washing Your Hands Is So Important Especially Now.

Its been 100+ days since the first corona virus case was reported in Kenya. And mood on the ground suggests, Kenyans aren’t slightly bothered about contracting the virus anymore. It seems like everything is slowly going back to normal with people rarely washing their hands or practicing social distancing. Kenyans seem to have forgotten that the corona virus is real and measures placed by the Ministry of Health are for their own good.

I recently boarded a matatu in Nairobi and I was shocked, no one adhered to social distancing let alone the use sanitizers. Worst of it all was no one was slightly bothered. But the question is, are people just tired of enforcing these guidelines or do they just don’t believe the corona virus is real? Whatever the case, Kenyans should adhere to the set guidelines.

A lot of Kenyans have less frequented the number of times they wash their hands, sanitize things or practice social distancing. All because they hypothetically don’t know somebody who knows somebody who knows somebody who has corona. But shouldn’t we all be logical about the whole situation? We live in a country that has a population of 52 million and you expect to know someone who knows someone with the positive number at just under 10,000. Do the math people.

We must all fight this pandemic together so as to gain back our normal lives. And one of the ways we can fight the corona virus pandemic is through washing hands. Here are a few reasons why you need to keep on washing your hands despite not wanting to. We must remember we are in the middle of a pandemic.

Hand washing is the best way to keep you from getting sick and spreading germs.

Good hand washing is the first line of defense against the spread of may diseases not just the corona virus. Some of the diseases you will be protecting yourself from by washing your hands include meningitis, bronchitis, hepatitis A, the flu and many types of diarrhea. Hand washing can prevent about 30% of diarrhea-related sicknesses and about 20% of respiratory infections.

Did you know; globally 1 in 5 people wash their hands after going to the toilet?

Hand washing lifts away dirt, oil and other dangerous agents that get on your hands.

By hand washing your hands will be able to remove all the dirt and pathogens wrapped up in mucus unlike using a sanitizer. A sanitizer doesn’t remove anything: it only disinfects bacteria and viruses and can even leave pesticides or spores on your hands.

Hand washing helps battle the rise in antibiotic resistance.

By washing your hands you will be preventing the contraction of diseases which will in turn reduce the amount of antibiotics people use and the likelihood of antibiotic resistance. Hand washing also prevents people from getting sick from germs that are already resistant to antibiotics.

Not washing hands harms children around the world

By washing your hands with soap and water you will help protect 1 out of 3 children who get sick with diarrhea and 1 out of 5 children with respiratory infections like pneumonia.

About 1.8 million children under the age of 5 die each year from diarrhea diseases and pneumonia, the top two killers of young children around the world. So, please wash your hands not just for yourself but for all children in the world.

Clean Hands Save Lives

We can never say this enough, clean hands save lives. Wash your hands and #KomeshaCorona
