Apply Now For SDGs & Her Competition 2020.

Applications are now open for the SDGs & Her competition. The SDGs & Her is an online competition that showcases the work of women entrepreneurs in supporting the sustainable development goals (SDGS) through their business operations.

In 2015, all 193 United Nations member countries signed on to 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to “create the future we want in 2030.”

The first SDGs & Her competition was in 2018 and it managed to attract over 1200 contenders from 88 countries through an online competition platform. In 2019 the competition attracted over 1200 entries from all over the world; sub Saharan Africa, Latin America, Caribbean, South Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, Europe and central Asia, and East Asia and the pacific. The 2020 applications are set to hit an all-time high with more women entrepreneurs venturing into businesses that support SDGs.

The SDGs & Her work in line with the following objectives;

  • Recognize women who work in implementing the SDGs, including women business owners of microenterprises
  • Increase knowledge on SDGs and their potential impacts on women among non-traditional audiences
  • Collaborate with private sector partners on all SDGs but SDG 5 in particular; to share practices and innovative ideas

In 2019 Taxshe, owned by Vandana Suri from India, and Green Business Innovation, owned by Saida Yusupova from Uzbekistan were the winners of SDGs & Her competition. TaxShe is an exclusive, all-women, driver-on-demand service that provides transportation services to school children and women workers, making day-time and late-night travel safe. The business addresses SDG 5 to further gender equality, SDG 8 to promote decent work and economic growth, and SDG 10 to reduce inequality. Green Business Innovation links the UN Sustainable Development Goals with green business opportunities. Through their consultancy work, the company addresses SDG 6 to ensure clean water and sanitation for all; SDG 8 to promote decent work and economic growth, SDG 9 to build industry, innovation, and resilient infrastructure; and SDG 13 to take urgent climate action.

The 2020 SDGs & Her competition seeks to find women who are doing a phenomenal job in supporting the implementation of the 17 SDGs. For you to get a chance of winning the 2020 competition individuals can send an application through a short online template, describing their work and linking their initiative/product to 1 or more SDGs. Applications should be sent on or before 20th January 2020.

Women eligible to apply should own and/or lead micro-enterprises with 1-9 employees. The business should be in operation for at least 3 years.  Have a loan eligibility of under $10,000 or annual sales of under $100,000. Women who own a small enterprise with at least 10 employees and no more than 49 and have a loan eligibility of $100,000 or an annual sale of under $3,000,000 can also apply.

After a successful application entries will be screened by a university partner and then judged by an expert panel. Judges will determine the winners based on the impact on the SDGs, vision and purpose, and clarity of entries.

Winners of the SDGs & Her competition will receive leadership training, mentoring and will be flown to Washington DC, for an event that will be held at the World Bank Group-IMF spring meeting in April 2020, where they will showcase their achievement. The stories of the winning women entrepreneurs will also be shared on partner’s social media and websites.
