A visit to Ndugu Mdogo Rescue Center

Ndugu Mdogo Rescue Centre

Ndugu Mdogo Rescue Centre located in the slum of Kibra is a subsidiary of Koinonia Community; a Non-Governmental Organization headquartered at Shalom House situated on St. Daniel Comboni Road off Ngong –Karen road, Nairobi Kenya. It was started in September 2005 by Fr. Renato Kizito as a home for rescued destitute street children with the aim of rehabilitating them before re-integrating them back into the society, with integrity

We visited the center in November 2011 when one of us was celebrating her birthday. We then celebrated with the boys and encouraged them that they were lucky to be where they were as this presented them an opportunity to grow up just like the other privileged children.

Boys aged between 5 and 15 years are brought to Ndugu Mdogo center for a one year rigorous rehabilitation program before they are ready to be re-integrated into the society. Total orphans are then sent to homes run by Koinonia, a community based NGO, after rehabilitation.

One of the boys finally found a happy home despite being abandoned by his parents to fend for himself in the cruel streets of Nairobi, he felt that something good had come out of his misfortunes.

One of the boys had horrifying tales of street life, from sniffing glue to doing hard drugs such as bang and heroine to pick pocketing, maiming and bludgeoning residents just to survive another day.
But then he came to realization that he could grow up just like any other privileged child, by engaging in activities like playing drums, dance, music, drama and soccer to improve his social and communication skills.

The Programs
The Centre has several rehabilitation programs to help the children including;
• Group therapy
• Koran/Bible study program
• Drug cleaning program
• Talent development program
