We’re starting off this month on a high note by spotlighting a woman who has defied all odds to champion for gender equality on a global scale.
Meet Lubna Qassim. A beautiful woman at heart and at sight and an advocate for gender equality. She is the first female to sit on the executive team of Emirates NBD. She is a leading global lawyer and a powerful advocate of governance and diversity. Lubna Qassim has worked for more than 17 years as a lawyer. Completed her education in UK and qualified as a lawyer both in UK & UAE. She is passionate about corporate governance and gender equality.
Who is Lubna Qassim?
Lubna Qassim is an executive vice president at Emirates NBD, chief group general counsel & company secretary of Emirates NBD.
Lubna Qassim sits on a number of boards both listed and non-profitable organizations. She has a very demanding role at the bank for managing all the legal matters and issues affecting the entire group.
Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum (Vice President of the United Arab Emirates) and his daughter Sheikh Manal Bin Mohamed Al Maktoum (the chairwoman of DWE), played important role in the selection of Ms. Lubna to sit on the board of this esteemed Dubai government agency which champions the women agenda in the emirate of Dubai.
One of the reasons for her selection in the Dubai women’s establishment was the value she has added as a female executive in finance and contributing to such a critical business as a GC. She takes gender parity seriously and passionately advocate in free time through writings and public speaking.
And Yes, She’s Multilingual!
Lubna Qassim is very keen of learning new languages. She believes that the conquest of learning can be achieved through the knowledge of languages. She is multilingual; she can speak English, Arabic, Persian, French, and Hindi.
How She’s Handled Challenges Faced Along The Way
She describes her journey so far as challenging and rewarding. Ms. Lubna says she’s grateful to all the challenges which came in her way which has made her what she is today and wouldn’t choose a different path even if she had a chance again. She never allowed any wind to stand between her and her goal. Through resilience, perseverance and strong faith she have overcome. Her life mantra is: “whenever life gave me 100 reasons to cry I have always showed life that I have 1000 reasons to smile”.
She has been working with lawyers around the globe which makes her the global lawyer that she is today. Through her experience in private practice she worked with both lawyers and clients in Asia, Latin America, America, UK and Mena which gave her a very comprehensive cross border experience in formative years.
Her Views On Women Leadership
Lubna Qassim’s views on the women leadership and providing her the equal opportunities: “gender parity is critically required not because it’s a woman’s issue but because there is a business case and most importantly it’s a governance issue. It’s important that corporations commit to gender diversity so they can ultimately be more profitable. Women promoting this cause are too often and yet the changes and progress have been very slow. She believes we will start witnessing a pragmatic shift when male executives including the chairmen and CEOs will be seriously committing as part of the yearly objective. The number of women in c-suite and the boardroom at a global level is alarming so men to lean in and lead to close the gender parity gap.”
During her years in the government, she contributed to the legal landscape of Dubai and worked on the reform of economic legislations in the UAE and its very rewarding to see many of these laws and policies materialized at country level. Through her work at DWE, she succeeds in extending the maternity leave in Dubai which was positively embraced.
Completing the reform of suite of federal economic laws and turning around a foreign dispute of 2billion dirhams into a victory. Ms. Lubna and team have also concluded many women friendly initiatives in UAE. They have leaped milestones by appointing female ministers, female diplomats, female parliamentarians and so much more.
